This year Mearfest are proud to pay tribute BUDGIE by hosting The Bandoliers at our June 2nd gig at The Irish Club Slough.
They are the number one BUDGIE tribute band.
We have been given special items of clothing kindly donated by Simon Wilson by the late very great John Thomas from the original BUDGIE.
"John Thomas (1952 to 2016) was an English 'rock' guitarist, with 'Budgie'. John Henry Thomas was born in Winson Green, Birmingham, England, on February 21st 1952. Already a veteran of the hard-rocking 'George Hatcher Band', the electric guitarist came to prominence when he replaced Tony Bourge in the Welsh 'rock' combo 'Budgie', playing with them from 1979 to 1988. He also married his long-time girlfriend Margaret in that year. However, there were criticisms about his competence as a guitarist, though it needs to be remembered that he was a much simpler player than Bourge. 'Budgie' soon became prime imitators of bands such as 'Black Sabbath', a stylistic move Thomas was able to put across with ease once their sets were presented to the American 'heavy metal' crowd. He had major input into the group's songwriting too, his collective body of co-written titles including "Renegade", "Victim" (featured here), "Hellbender", "Gunslinger", "Rock Your Blood" and "Panzer Division Destroyed". He was also instrumental in putting together the tracks "Forearm Smash" and "N.O.R.A.D. (Doomsday City)", as well as "Finger on the Button" and "House of a Sinner". Thomas took part in extensive tours of Europe and the UK with 'Budgie', and they released three albums - "Power Supply" (1980), "Night Flight" (1981) and "Deliver Us From Evil" (1982). He also helped write a lot of typical love songs, though these were often criticised for their "cheesy" titles, and he appeared at six of their reunion concerts between 1995 and 2001. In later years, he was perhaps best-known for running "JT's Guitars", a Bath Street music shop in Birmingham city centre. John Thomas died on March 3rd 2016, shortly after being admitted to a Birmingham hospital with pneumonia. He was 63, and leaves his wife plus two daughters."
